Solid oak chaises in a primary bedroom

A pair of built-in solid white oak chaises tucked into the quiet corners of a primary bedroom — sculptural slab seats with low backs, sized to the room and softened with linen cushions for reading and rest.

Chaise made up with linen cushions

Overview

The owners of a larger family home wanted somewhere to sit in their bedroom that wasn't another armchair pulled from the living room. We drew two chaises sized to the architecture — one against the window, one tucked into the opposite corner — so the room reads as a single composed space, not furniture parked in it.

Each chaise is built from thick slabs of solid white oak, joined with hidden mechanical fasteners and finished with a clear hardwax oil. The low back panel runs into the wall return at a soft angle, so the piece feels held by the room rather than placed against it. A cantilevered side surface doubles as a bedside ledge for a book and a cup of tea.

Linen-covered foam cushions are loose so they can be lifted, plumped, and replaced over the years. The oak underneath is the part built to outlast everything else — heavy, honest, and meant to be lived on.
