Oak kids' room with loft bed and stair storage
A full-height kids' room built entirely in white oak — a lofted upper bed with slatted guardrail, a lower bed below, a staircase that doubles as drawers and bookshelves, and a long window bench for toys and reading.
Room lived in, after move-in
Overview
The family wanted one room to grow with their child for the next decade — somewhere to sleep, climb, read, hide, and keep a small mountain of things. Instead of a freestanding bunk and a separate dresser, we built the whole room as one piece of joinery in solid white oak.
An upper bed sits inside a lofted volume with a slatted oak guardrail that filters light without closing the room in. A second bed tucks in below for siblings or sleepovers. The staircase up to the loft is the storage: each tread hides a drawer, and the side opens into open cubbies and bookshelves at the right height for small hands.
Along the window, a long oak bench with open cubbies catches toys, books and the things kids actually use. Everything is finished in clear hardwax oil — soft to the touch, easy to repair, and built to be sanded back and re-oiled when the next child takes the room over.
